1780 - Famous Dark day in New England; noticed at sunrise at Pawlet; spread east during morning to Boston; candles needed to read; cast eerie, brassy hue on foliage and outdoor objects, attributed to smoke from forest fires in West.
1883 - "The most disasterous forest fire that ever occurred in state"; originated in vicinity of Groton in southern Caledonia county.
1982 - Small tornado did structural damage at Island Pond; confirmed and photographed by Lyndon State College meteorologists.
