...National Flood Safety Awareness Week Continues...
The National Weather Service in Burlington, VT has declared March
12 through March 18 as Flood Safety Awareness Week. Each day during
the awareness week will feature information about a different flood
related topic. Today`s topic is Partner Resources.
The National Weather Service works with and relies on strategic
partners involved in river observations, reservoir management,
floodplain management, flood hazard mitigation, and flood
preparedness and safety to reduce the loss of life and property due
to floods. Today we are sharing some great tools from several of our
partners.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is one of the most
important federal partners in the NWS river forecast and warning
program. River gages operated by the USGS provide the basis for NWS
forecasts and warnings. River stage data can be found on the USGS
Water Watch web page at: waterwatch.usgs.gov/. Alerts for river
stages are available through the Water Alert - National Water
Information System at: maps.waterdata.usgs.gov/mapper/wateralert/.
A significant tool in flood protection for homeowners and
communities is the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Flood
losses are not covered by your homeowner`s insurance policy, but are
through separate flood insurance as part of the NFIP. Anyone can
purchase National Flood Insurance if your community participates in
the National Flood Insurance Program. You can get more information
on the National Flood Insurance Program at
http://www.floodsmart.gov.

additional key partners are the National Hydrologic Warning Council,
Association of State Floodplain Managers, the National Safety
Council, media outlets, and many other government and private sector
organizations. For more information about any of our partners, or to
learn about partners local to your area, contact your local NWS
office.
As we wrap up this year`s Flood Safety Awareness Week, remember,
flooding can occur in any of the fifty states or U.S territories at
any time of the year. Prepare yourself, your family, and your home.
